What is Zcash?

Zcash is Bitcoin’s private cousin: the same 21 million hard cap, the same halving schedule, the same proof-of-work skeleton, plus the one thing Bitcoin famously lacks. Every Bitcoin transaction is public forever; Zcash lets senders shield transactions with zero-knowledge cryptography (zk-SNARKs), proving a payment is valid without revealing who paid whom or how much.

The privacy is optional, which matters in both directions: transparent addresses keep Zcash listable on regulated exchanges, and the same optionality is the standing critique, since only a fraction of activity actually uses the shielded pools. Launched in 2016 by serious cryptographers, ZEC spent most of a decade as a fading also-ran. Then 2026 happened.

The 2026 resurrection, dated and specific

Three dominoes, in order. January: the SEC closed a two-year investigation into the Zcash Foundation with no action, lifting a cloud that had kept institutions away. May through August: Grayscale pushed to convert its long-running Zcash Trust into a spot ETF, and on August 25, 2026, ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca, roughly $300 million of ZEC under Coinbase custody, the first US spot privacy-coin ETF ever. Underneath both: the November 2024 halving had already cut ZEC’s inflation to about 2% on a hard-capped, ~16.8-million-coin supply.

The market’s response stacked a 400% late-2025 run with another 60%+ week into the ETF launch, an eight-year high around $855, and a return to the top dozen assets, around $13-14 billion. As of late August 2026, ZEC trades in the high $700s with post-launch volatility doing exactly what post-launch volatility does.

The asterisks, because this page earns its keep there

The record high first: the $3,192 figure (some trackers print $5,900+) dates to October 29, 2016, days after launch, when circulating supply was close to zero and a handful of trades produced absurd prints. “75% below its all-time high” is technically true of today’s ZEC and practically meaningless; the honest historical anchor is the January 2018 peak near $880, which this rally has genuinely approached.

The rally’s plumbing next: at the ETF-launch peak, ZEC futures volume ran about nine times spot volume, with open interest near 13% of the entire market cap. Leverage-driven moves cut both ways with equal enthusiasm, which our rally coverage keeps relearning in public. Two more for the list: reporting puts a single firm near 18% of Zcash’s hashrate (detail from our mining analysis, worth knowing in a decentralization-branded asset), and this June a vulnerability in the shielded pool itself crashed the price before the Ironwood upgrade patched it. A privacy coin’s bugs live in its deepest layer; that one was handled well and belongs on the record anyway.

The regulatory irony

Zcash is currently living both futures at once: delisted or restricted by various exchanges and jurisdictions (Europe’s regime is broadly hostile to privacy assets), while simultaneously wrapped in an NYSE-listed ETF in America. Same coin, opposite verdicts. Which future wins is the actual long-term bet under all the price action, and anyone buying ZEC should be able to say which side they’re taking and why. Availability on your platform is checkable in two minutes via the usual routine.

Price history in one paragraph

Launch-day madness in 2016 (the asterisked record), a real peak near $880 in January 2018, then six years of decline through double digits while the market decided privacy coins were unownable, the 2024 halving, the late-2025 400% awakening, and 2026’s ETF-driven return to the high $700s. It’s the most extreme left-for-dead-to-headline arc among the majors, and both halves of it are information: narratives can resurrect, and they can also spend six years dead first.

Buying and storing ZEC

Availability varies by region more than for any other asset on our price pages, so check your platform first. Beyond that, the playbook holds: schedules over chase (quadruply so after a 60% week), self-custody for the long term, test sends always. Zcash-specific: exchanges use transparent addresses (starting with t), shielded addresses (z) require wallets built for them like Zashi or Ywallet, hardware-wallet support for shielded ZEC remains limited, and the ETF route now exists for anyone who wants the price exposure inside a brokerage account, at a notably rich 2.5% annual fee that quietly answers the question of who profits from privacy either way.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of Zcash right now?

The live ZEC/USD price at the top of this page updates every minute from CoinGecko’s aggregated data, with 24-hour change, market cap, volume, and a live chart below.

What is Zcash’s all-time high?

Nominally $3,192 (some trackers report higher), set October 29, 2016, days after launch when near-zero supply made prices meaningless; treat it as an artifact. The honest historical benchmark is the January 2018 peak near $880, which August 2026’s rally to about $855 nearly reclaimed after eight years.

Why is Zcash going up in 2026?

Stacked catalysts: the SEC closed its Zcash Foundation investigation in January without action, Grayscale’s ZCSH became the first US spot privacy-coin ETF on August 25, and the November 2024 halving had cut inflation to ~2% on a hard-capped supply. Heavy leveraged derivatives activity amplified the move, which cuts both ways.

Is Zcash a good investment?

A personal decision on a sharp question: whether financial privacy gets institutionalized (the ETF future) or marginalized (the delisting future). The bull case adds Bitcoin-like supply mechanics post-halving; the risk list includes leverage-fragile rallies, regional bans, hashrate concentration, and a demonstrated six-year drawdown. Size for total loss.

How is Zcash different from Monero?

Monero’s privacy is mandatory for every transaction; Zcash’s is optional via shielded pools. That makes Monero the purist’s choice and largely unlistable on regulated venues, while Zcash’s optionality kept it exchange-compatible and, as of 2026, ETF-compatible, at the cost of most activity remaining transparent.

Does Zcash have a supply cap and halvings?

Yes: 21 million maximum, identical to Bitcoin, with roughly 16.8 million circulating and halvings on schedule, most recently November 2024, which cut annual inflation to about 2%. It’s the closest major asset to Bitcoin’s monetary design, with privacy attached.

Is Zcash legal?

Owning it is legal in most countries, but exchange availability is patchier than for any comparable asset: several platforms and jurisdictions restrict privacy coins, particularly in Europe, even as a US spot ETF now trades on NYSE Arca. Check your local platform’s listing status before planning around it.

Where should I store Zcash?

Exchange amounts on a licensed platform that lists it; long-term holdings in self-custody, noting that transparent (t) addresses work everywhere while shielded (z) addresses need dedicated wallets and enjoy limited hardware support. Test sends first, and the ETF exists for brokerage-account exposure without custody at all.
