What is XRP?

XRP is the native coin of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain built in 2012 for one specialty: moving value fast and cheaply. Transactions settle in a few seconds for fractions of a cent, which is the entire pitch: not a vault like Bitcoin, not a programmable machine like Ethereum, but a payments rail, aimed mostly at banks and money transmitters moving funds across borders.

A distinction that decades of confusion have not killed: XRP is the asset, Ripple is a company. Ripple builds payment products that can use XRP and holds a very large amount of it, but it doesn’t control the ledger, and the two names are not interchangeable, however often headlines merge them.

The supply story is the opposite of Bitcoin’s

All 100 billion XRP were created at launch. Nothing is mined; there are no halvings and no staking. Ripple received the majority and still holds tens of billions, most locked in on-ledger escrow that releases up to a set amount monthly, with unused portions re-locked. Every transaction also burns a tiny fee, shrinking supply at a pace best described as ceremonial.

The honest framing: XRP’s scarcity is a policy, not a protocol guarantee like Bitcoin’s 21 million. Holders are trusting escrow mechanics and one company’s selling discipline, a trust that got tested in 2026 when filings showed Grayscale’s XRP Trust alone sold over 103 million XRP (about $181 million) in the first half of the year. Supply overhang is XRP’s permanent background hum.

The lawsuit era, and what replaced it

XRP spent 2020-2024 defined by the SEC’s lawsuit against Ripple. The short version of the ending: a 2023 court ruling found XRP itself is not inherently a security in open-market sales, the case concluded with a penalty on Ripple’s institutional sales, and US exchanges relisted the asset. That resolution is why XRP could join the 2025-26 wave of US spot ETFs at all.

The regulatory story now runs through the same channel as everything else: market-structure legislation like the CLARITY Act, whose Senate delays still move XRP’s price more than most assets, since a payments token aimed at banks lives and dies by regulatory certainty.

The ETF experiment, measured weekly

Five US spot XRP ETFs now trade, and this site tracks their flows every Monday, which produced one of our more useful findings: XRP funds regularly print days of exactly $0.00 in flows, the zero-flow pattern from our altcoin ETF analysis. Institutional money treats XRP as a tactical satellite: fed in bursts (a $39.8 million four-day run during August’s rally week), starved to zero in between, never the main course the way Bitcoin’s funds are.

For XRP holders that’s the honest new metric to watch: not partnership rumors, but whether the ETF flows graduate from bursts to a base. So far they haven’t, and we’ll keep reporting either way.

Price history without the fan fiction

XRP’s chart is crypto’s great patience test: an explosive run to $3.84 in January 2018, then seven years below it, including long stretches under fifty cents while the lawsuit ground on. The post-case revival carried it back above $3 in early 2025, the 2025-26 winter cut it hard, and August 2026’s rally lifted it nearly 20% in a week to the $1.40 area, still roughly 60% below the 2018 record.

Worth internalizing from that history: XRP has repeatedly delivered its gains in short violent bursts separated by years of drift, a profile that punishes impatience and leverage more than most assets. Whatever you believe about its future, the chart argues for schedules over timing and sizing that survives the drift years.

Buying and storing XRP: one extra trap

Everything from the standard playbook applies: a licensed exchange, self-custody for the long term, test sends first. XRP adds one trap of its own: sends to exchanges usually require a destination tag alongside the address, and forgetting it strands funds in support-ticket limbo. The withdrawal guide covers the routine, and the recovery guide covers the day the routine got skipped. Also mildly famous: XRPL accounts require a small XRP reserve to exist, so a few coins always stay behind in the wallet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of XRP right now?

The live XRP/USD price at the top of this page updates every minute from CoinGecko’s aggregated data, with 24-hour change, market cap, volume, and a live chart. Small differences across exchanges are normal spread. XRP price trends and analysis can provide valuable insights for investors looking to optimize their positions. By understanding historical price movements and market sentiment, one can better anticipate future fluctuations. Keeping an eye on key technical indicators will further enhance decision-making in a volatile market.

What was XRP’s all-time high?

$3.84 in January 2018 by most trackers (methodologies differ slightly across data providers). The early-2025 revival brought XRP back above $3 without breaking the record, and the 2025-26 winter pulled it well below again.

Is XRP a security?

A 2023 US court ruling found XRP itself is not inherently a security in open-market sales, and the SEC case against Ripple concluded with a penalty focused on institutional sales. US exchanges relisted it and spot ETFs followed. Classification frameworks continue evolving through legislation, which is why bills like the CLARITY Act move XRP’s price.

What’s the difference between XRP and Ripple?

XRP is a cryptocurrency on the public XRP Ledger; Ripple is a private company building payment products that can use it. Ripple holds large amounts of XRP, mostly in escrow, but doesn’t control the ledger. Buying XRP is not buying Ripple stock.

Does XRP have a supply cap?

All 100 billion XRP were pre-created at launch; none are mined. Ripple’s escrowed holdings release on a monthly schedule with unused amounts re-locked, and small transaction fees are burned permanently. Supply can only shrink, but the pace is negligible; the practical supply question is Ripple’s and large holders’ selling, not issuance.

Are there XRP ETFs?

Yes, five US spot XRP ETFs from issuers including Bitwise and Franklin Templeton trade as of 2026. Their flows run hot-and-cold: burst inflows during risk-on weeks and frequent days of exactly zero, a pattern our weekly ETF flows report tracks against the majors.

Can XRP reach $10?

Arithmetic first: with tens of billions of XRP circulating, $10 implies a market value in the high hundreds of billions, several times today’s and near Ethereum’s scale. Not impossible in crypto, but a claim of that size needs adoption evidence of that size, and current ETF flows don’t show it. Treat round-number predictions as marketing until the math shows up.

Where should I store XRP?

Active amounts on a licensed exchange; long-term holdings in self-custody with a hardware wallet. Remember XRP’s specifics: destination tags are required for exchange deposits, a small reserve stays locked in each XRPL account, and every transfer deserves a test send first.
