What is BNB?
BNB started life in 2017 as a discount coupon. Binance sold it in its ICO, and its main job was cutting trading fees on the exchange. Then the coupon grew a blockchain.
Today BNB is the fuel of BNB Chain, one of the largest smart-contract networks by users and activity, spanning the original BNB Smart Chain, the opBNB layer-2, and the Greenfield storage network. It ranks among the top handful of crypto assets by market value, and its dual identity, exchange token and network fuel at once, is both its strength and the honest risk this page gets to below.
What BNB is actually used for
Three real jobs. It pays gas on BNB Chain, where transactions cost cents and the ecosystem hosts one of DeFi’s busiest populations. It still cuts trading fees on Binance, the world’s largest exchange. And it’s the entry ticket to Binance’s token-launch platforms, historically one of the stronger demand drivers during bull markets.
Notice what all three share: every job connects to one company’s ecosystem. That’s unusual among top-five assets, and it’s the correct lens for everything else about BNB.
The burn machine: scarcity as corporate policy
BNB launched with 200 million coins and is contractually shrinking toward 100 million. Quarterly auto-burns destroy coins by formula, a real-time mechanism burns a slice of gas fees, and circulating supply now sits near 133 million and falling.
The distinction this site keeps drawing applies here in full: Bitcoin’s scarcity is physics-grade protocol law, while BNB’s is a published corporate commitment, honored consistently for years, and still a commitment. Deflation by policy has worked; holders should just file it under promises kept rather than laws of nature.
The honest risk section
BNB’s fortunes ride one company more than any comparable asset. Binance’s 2023 settlement with US authorities ($4.3 billion, its founder stepping down) put a price on that concentration, and the token absorbed every headline of that saga. The company survived and the token recovered to new highs, which is genuinely informative, and the structural coupling remains: regulatory action against Binance is, functionally, action against BNB.
Add the standard critiques (BNB Chain’s validator set is small and Binance-adjacent, making it one of the more centralized major networks) and the profile clarifies: BNB is less a bet on a neutral protocol and more equity-like exposure to the crypto industry’s biggest company, paid in a token. Some investors want exactly that. They should just know it’s what they’re buying, which is the whole reason this section exists.
Price history in three sentences
From roughly ten cents at the 2017 ICO to $690 in the 2021 mania, down 80%+ in the winter after, through the 2023 regulatory storm, and then to a $1,370 all-time high in October 2025 as the last cycle peaked. The 2025-26 winter roughly halved it, in line with the majors. Ten-thousand-fold ICO returns and multiple 60-80% drawdowns are the same chart, which is the most crypto sentence on this page.
Buying and storing BNB: the network trap
Standard playbook first: a licensed exchange (note that BNB’s availability varies by region and platform, partly for the regulatory reasons above), schedules over timing, self-custody for the long term.
BNB’s specific trap is the network menu: BNB exists on BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) and wrapped on other networks, and BSC’s addresses look identical to Ethereum’s, which makes it one of the most common wrong-network mistakes in crypto. The good news from our recovery guide: that same address-sharing usually makes the mistake fixable in your own wallet. Prevention is still cheaper: match the network on both sides, test send first, every time. BNB can also be staked via delegation on BNB Chain for low single-digit yields; the staking how-to covers the routine.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of BNB right now?
The live BNB/USD price at the top of this page updates every minute from CoinGecko’s aggregated data, with 24-hour change, market cap, volume, and a live chart. Exchange-to-exchange differences are normal spread.
What was BNB’s all-time high?
$1,370, reached on October 13, 2025 as the last cycle peaked, per CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko. The 2025-26 winter cut the price roughly in half from that record, a drawdown consistent with BNB’s history of 60-80% cycle declines followed, so far, by recoveries.
What is BNB used for?
Gas fees on BNB Chain (BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, Greenfield), trading-fee discounts on the Binance exchange, and access to Binance’s token-launch platforms. All three utilities tie to the Binance ecosystem, which concentrates both the demand and the risk.
Is BNB a good investment?
A personal decision. The case for: massive real usage, a consistently executed deflationary burn, and survival through severe regulatory stress. The case against: deep dependence on one company’s fate, network centralization critiques, and crypto-standard 50-80% drawdowns. Anyone buying should size for total loss and understand they’re taking quasi-corporate exposure.
How does the BNB burn work?
Two mechanisms: quarterly auto-burns that destroy BNB by a published formula, and a real-time burn of a portion of BNB Chain gas fees. Supply started at 200 million, sits near 133 million, and is committed to shrink to 100 million, making BNB deflationary by corporate policy rather than protocol law.
Can BNB be staked?
Yes, via delegation to BNB Chain validators for low single-digit annual yields, directly from compatible wallets or through exchanges (which keep a cut). The usual staking rules apply: verify the interface, know the unbonding period, and log rewards for taxes.
Is BNB the same as Binance?
No: Binance is a private company, BNB is a tradeable asset on a public network. But the coupling is tighter than for any other major asset: BNB’s utilities live in Binance’s ecosystem, and regulatory events at the company have historically moved the token hard in both directions.
Where should I store BNB?
Active amounts on a licensed exchange; long-term holdings in self-custody, ideally a hardware wallet with BNB Chain support. Watch the network selector on every transfer: BEP-20 and Ethereum addresses look identical, so wrong-network sends are common, usually recoverable in your own wallet, and always prevented by a small test transaction first.
