MetaMask Stuck on Pending? Speed Up, Cancel, or Reset Nonce (Safely)

A MetaMask transaction has been sitting on “Pending” for an hour. Maybe a day. Everything you’ve tried to send since is pending too, the spinner spins, and somewhere in your head a voice asks whether the money is in some void between here and there.
It isn’t. An unconfirmed transaction means your coins never left; they’re still at your address while your request waits in the network’s fee queue. And unlike a stuck exchange withdrawal, where you can only ask support nicely, this transaction is yours: you signed it, so you hold the two levers that fix it. MetaMask calls them Speed Up and Cancel, and there’s a third, lesser-known reset for the stubborn cases.
One concept first, because it explains everything: the nonce. Every transaction from your address gets a sequence number, and the network processes them strictly in order. Transaction #14 cannot confirm before #13. So when one low-fee transaction jams, everything behind it isn’t stuck too; it’s queued behind the jam. You don’t have five stuck transactions. You have one stuck transaction and four waiting for it.
2. Tap it → choose Speed Up (if you still want it to happen) or Cancel (if you don’t). Accept the suggested aggressive fee; this is not the moment to economize.
3. Wait a minute or two. When the jammed transaction resolves, everything queued behind it flows through on its own.
What Speed Up and Cancel actually do
Neither button is magic; both are the same trick. Speed Up rebroadcasts your identical transaction with the same nonce and a higher fee, so miners pick the better-paying twin and the old one dies. Cancel broadcasts a do-nothing transaction (zero value, to yourself) with the same nonce and a higher fee, so if it wins the race, the slot is consumed and your original can never confirm.
The word “race” is doing real work in that sentence: Cancel competes against your original, and if the original confirms first, the cancel simply fails. That’s why cancelling a transaction that’s seconds from confirming sometimes doesn’t take, and why nothing was harmed when it doesn’t. The stubborn cases
Speed Up or Cancel is missing or greyed out. Some custom networks and older app versions hide the buttons. The manual equivalent: enable Settings → Advanced → Customize transaction nonce, then send a new 0-amount transaction to your own address, manually setting the nonce to match the stuck one, with a clearly higher fee. Same race, hand-rolled.
Pending for days, and the buttons do nothing. Long-stuck transactions often get dropped by network nodes entirely, leaving MetaMask displaying a ghost: the network forgot it, the app didn’t. The cure is Settings → Advanced → Clear activity tab data. This resets only MetaMask’s local history and nonce tracking, touches nothing on the blockchain, and cannot move funds; after it, the ghost disappears and new transactions send normally. It’s the single most effective obscure button in the app.
You sent a replacement and now BOTH show pending. Normal: they share a nonce, only one can ever confirm, and the loser vanishes. Watch the Activity tab settle for a few minutes before doing anything else.
New transactions fail with “nonce too low.” The stuck one actually confirmed (or was replaced) while the app’s counter lagged. Clear activity data, restart, resend.
Hardware wallet attached. Speed Up and Cancel are new signatures, so the device must confirm them like any transaction. If the device isn’t connected when you tap the button, nothing broadcasts and the jam continues, which reads like the button “not working.”
It confirmed, but the tokens aren’t showing. Different, happier problem: the transaction is done and the wallet display hasn’t caught up, which is the import fix, one article over.
The scam that hunts this exact moment
Post about a stuck MetaMask transaction anywhere public and “MetaMask Support” will find you within minutes, warm, competent, and fake. There is no support agent that DMs first, no fix that requires your seed phrase, and no “wallet validation” or “resync portal” websites. The real fixes are all inside the app you already have, and every external helper for this problem is fishing, per the standing doctrine: the phrase goes in wallet software and hardware devices, nowhere else, no exceptions during emergencies, especially during emergencies.
Sixty seconds of prevention
Use MetaMask’s suggested fees and pick the aggressive tier when timing matters; hand-lowered gas is how most jams are born. Keep one pending transaction at a time until this all feels boring. And when a transaction genuinely can’t wait (a liquidation, a mint, an exit), overpaying by fifty cents is the cheapest insurance in crypto.
