How to recover crypto sent to the wrong network, own wallet and exchange scenarios

You sent USDT on the wrong network. Or ETH to a BNB Chain address, or something to somewhere it wasn’t supposed to go, and now the receiving side shows nothing and the sending side shows gone.

Before anything else: breathe. This is the most common serious mistake in crypto, and the majority of wrong-network sends are recoverable, because of a technical quirk that works in your favor. Whether yours is depends on exactly one question, answered in the box below.

The 2-minute triage Who controls the receiving address?

Your own wallet (MetaMask, Trust, hardware wallet, any app where you hold the seed phrase): very likely recoverable. Most “wrong networks” (Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, Avalanche) share the same address format, so your coins arrived at an address you already control, just on a different chain. Add that network to your wallet and they’ll be sitting there. Steps below.

Someone else’s address, on any network: only the recipient can return it. Contact them if you can.

Why this mistake is so easy to make

The same token exists on many networks: USDT alone runs on Ethereum, Tron, BNB Chain, Polygon, Solana and more, and an exchange’s withdrawal screen asks you to pick. Meanwhile, most of those networks (all the “EVM” family) use identical-looking addresses starting with 0x. Same token name, same address format, five different roads.

So nothing warns you. The transaction is valid on the network it ran on, it confirms normally, and the explorer shows it delivered. The problem is purely that the destination side isn’t looking at that road, and the entire recovery question is whether it can be made to look.

Recovery, scenario by scenario

Scenario 1: You sent to your own wallet, wrong EVM network

The good one. Say you sent USDT on BNB Chain to your MetaMask address, but you expected it on Ethereum. Your address is the same on both chains, and your seed phrase controls it on both chains. The coins aren’t lost; your wallet just isn’t displaying that network.

The fix: add the network the coins actually traveled on to your wallet (wallets have an “add network” menu; chainlist.org fills the details for EVM chains). Switch to it, add the token contract if the balance doesn’t show automatically, and your funds appear. From there you can bridge them to the intended network or send them back properly. Verify which network they’re on first by pasting your address into that chain’s block explorer, per the habit from the withdrawal guide.

Scenario 2: You sent to an exchange deposit address, unsupported network

Here the address belongs to the exchange, so only they can access the coins, and whether they will depends on their policy. Open a support ticket immediately with: the TXID, the token, the network you used, the network you should have used, and the deposit address. Be precise and polite; the person reading decides how hard to try.

Outcomes range across exchanges: some credit it automatically after a delay, some recover manually for a fee (often fixed, sometimes meaningful), some state certain networks are unrecoverable. Two honest notes: recovery can take weeks, and an exchange’s willingness to handle this is itself a data point about the platform, the kind our red flags guide is built on.

Scenario 3: Forgot the memo or destination tag

Common with XRP, XLM, ATOM and similar sends to exchanges. The coins arrived at the exchange’s wallet but without the routing note that says which customer they belong to. Almost always recoverable by support ticket: provide the TXID and your account details, expect a processing delay, and expect some platforms to charge a small fee for the manual matching.

Scenario 4: Genuinely incompatible networks

Sending to an address format the destination chain can’t represent (say, Bitcoin to an Ethereum address) mostly fails before broadcasting, because the formats don’t match and the wallet rejects it. Where cross-format sends do go through via technicalities, recovery ranges from difficult to impossible. This scenario is rare precisely because the address formats act as a natural guardrail; the EVM family’s shared format is what removes that guardrail between its members.

Will recovery cost money? Scenario 1 costs only gas fees: a few dollars of the wrong network’s coin to move your funds (you may need to buy a tiny amount of that chain’s gas token, which is normal and fine). Exchange recoveries range from free to a fixed fee that varies by platform, disclosed when support responds. Anyone who contacts you offering recovery for an upfront payment is a scammer, no exceptions: real recovery never starts with a stranger’s DM.

If none of this worked

The wallet shows the network but no balance. Add the token manually: find the token’s contract address on that network (from the explorer page of your own transaction) and import it. Balances don’t display for tokens the wallet doesn’t know to look for.

The exchange refuses recovery. Ask once more, politely, referencing that other exchanges routinely recover this scenario. If the answer stays no, the coins are functionally gone; factor the experience into where you keep accounts. Recovery policies belong on your platform checklist from now on.

You’re not sure which network the coins went on. Take the TXID from the sending side and paste it into each candidate chain’s explorer; it will exist on exactly one. That chain is where your coins live and where recovery starts.

Someone in a forum or DM offers to recover it. Every unsolicited recovery offer is a scam targeting people in exactly your situation, often asking for your seed phrase or an advance fee. Nobody legitimate can recover coins from a network position they don’t control, and nobody legitimate cold-messages victims.

The prevention, in one habit

Everything above becomes irrelevant with the test-send routine: a small amount first, confirm it arrives on the right network, then the rest to the same verified path.
